Coppa Italia: Jankto strikes in Samp birthday win over Viterbese

Sampdoria took to the field for their first competitive fixture of the 2018/19 season on Sunday, a day that also marked the 72nd anniversary since the club’s foundation.

The Blucerchiati made sure it was a double celebration, as Marco Giampaolo’s side delivered a 1-0 birthday victory over Viterbese in the third round of the Coppa Italia.

In a goal-less first period, Gaston Ramirez went closest to breaking the deadlock, striking the woodwork with a dead-ball effort after little over 20 minutes. In the second half, substitute Jakub Jankto, on loan from Udinese, scored the decisive goal with just 20 minutes to play at the Ferraris, beating the Serie C team’s goalkeeper with a left-foot finish.

It was by no means a goal-fest but Doria could celebrate their birthday as well as a place in the fourth round of the cup, in which they will face SPAL on 5 December.
