Dugout Throwback, a journey through Sampdoria history

Dugout have dusted off the archives to bring us some sweet Sampdoria memories from yesteryear.

6 November 1991. Sampdoria were hosting Honved, the Hungarian champions, in the European Cup second round. The Marassi was packed to the rafters for the return leg, which the Blucerchiati went into trailing 2-1 from the away game in Hungary. Attilio Lombardo set Samp on their way before Gianluca Vialli’s double ensured their passage to the group stage, with Fausto Pari’s own goal proving irrelevant.

Another 6 November, this time in 1985. Benfica were the visitors in the second round of the Cup Winners’ Cup. Giuseppe Lorenzo struck to give Sampdoria a famous win but, alas, it wasn’t enough to overturn the 0-2 deficit from the first leg in Lisbon. The match nonetheless remains as a memorable Doria victory against one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
