Giampaolo: “An unfair result. We were the better side”

Marco Giampaolo admitted that Sampdoria’s Coppa Italia exit at the hands of AC Milan was a tough pill to swallow after watching his side outplay their opponents at the Stadio Ferraris on Saturday.

“Today the result wasn’t a fair reflection of what happened on the pitch,” the coach told journalists after the last-16 tie.

“It wasn’t a case of giving as good as we got this time,” he added, referring to the teams’ previous meeting in the league when Samp were edged out of a closely contested match. “We were better than them tonight. And I’ll say it again: this is a false result.

“A win would have given us the belief that only big teams have. It wasn’t to be, although we deserved it more than them. It’s a bitter pill but one we have to swallow.

“We gave every last drop of sweat and had countless shots – I don’t even know how many. [Pepe] Reina was the best player on the pitch. It’s Milan who go through despite only having two or three chances.”

With Samp’s involvement in the Coppa Italia now over for another year, all the focus turns to ensuring they have a strong second half to their league campaign.

“We’re really upset to go out of this competition – it’s so important to us. We battled and kept playing football right till the end,” Giampaolo continued.

“We’ll get stuck into the league again now and we want to keep doing well. Plus, we have [Manolo] Gabbiadini, [Edgar] Barreto and [Bartosz] Bereszynski now too. I have two players for every position. I’m very proud of this group of players we’ve put together.”
