Puggioni: “Not our best showing but we’ll bounce back”

Christian Puggioni admitted that Sampdoria were below their best as they surrendered a 1-0 lead to slip to defeat by Crotone at Marassi on Sunday afternoon.

“It wasn’t our best showing today,” said the Samp keeper, who nonetheless produced a string of fine saves for his team. “That said, it doesn’t erase all the good work we’ve done so far. We need to bounce back, starting from these two away games. We conceded from two strange situations. The first was a loose ball and the second was a break.”

Puggioni was keen to shrug off suggestions Sampdoria are struggling to deal with dead-ball situations at present.

“Let’s not create issues were there are none. We don’t have a problem from set pieces,” he said. “We need to take a breath, look at things and understand what’s gone wrong. Everyone would like to win every game, but sometimes your opponents just do better. That’s the way it is in Serie A.”

Last but not least, Puggioni had high praise for Patrick Schick, who scored a sumptuous goal at Marassi.

“He’s very technically gifted and a great finisher,” he said. “His biggest strength is that he always steps up whenever he’s called on.”
