Record-breaking Quagliarella nets twice in 6-0 Italy win, Sweden and Denmark held

There were two wins, one draw and two defeats for Sampdoria’s international contingent as the latest round of UEFA Euro 2020 qualification games and friendly matches continued on Tuesday night.

Fabio Quagliarella became Italy’s oldest-ever scorer – at the age of 36 years and 54 days – as he bagged two goals in the Azzurri’s 6-0 demolition of Lichtenstein at the Stadio Tardini in Parma. In Italy’s second Euro 2020 qualifier in Group J, Sensi gave the home side the lead on 17 minutes before Verratti made it 2-0 two minutes after the half-hour mark. It was then that Quagliarella got in on the act, scoring twice from the penalty spot on 35 and 48 minutes to make it 4-0, before laying on an assist for Kean for Italy’s fifth. Pavoletti completed the 6-0 rout on 77 minutes.

Norway and Sweden served up a rip-roaring Scandi derby in Oslo in Group F. With Albin Ekdal in the starting line-up, Sweden went 2-0 goals down before surging back to make it 3-2 on the stroke of full time, only for Norway to salvage a point in the dying seconds (Johnsen 41, King 59, Claesson 70, Quaison 86 and 90+1, Kamara 90+7).

Joachim Andersen was on the bench as Denmark pulled off a stunning comeback in their first match in Group D. Switzerland dominated the game in Basel, roaring into a 3-0 lead on 76 minutes, only for Denmark to score three in the space of ten minutes to secure a 3-3 draw (Freuler 19, Xhaka 66, Embolo 76, Jorgensen 84, Gytkjaer 88, Dalsgaard 90+3).

Jakub Jankto came off the bench in the 84th minute as Czech Republic were beaten 3-1 by Brazil in Prague, despite the home side having taken a first-half lead (Pavelka 37, Firmino 49, Gabriel Jesus 83 and 90).

After losing at home to Poland last time out, England U20s were beaten 1-0 by Portugal in Penafiel. Ronaldo Vieira started the game and was subbed off on the hour mark (Martelo 60).
