Samp held by Entella after glut of penalties in Chiavari

Sampdoria drew 2-2 with Virtus Entella this afternoon in what will go down as a tale of three penalties.

Walter Zenga fielded all of the Blucerchiati’s late summer signings, setting the team up in a 4-4-1-1 formation with Correa as the trequartista. The Argentine was involved from the off, drawing a penalty from Belli in just the first minute of the game. Correa himself stepped up to send Iacobucci the wrong way and put the Doria 0-1 up.

Samp came close to making it 2-0 through Rodriguez, but it was Entella who scored next after Ceccarelli’s shot struck Regini on the arm. The ref pointed to the spot and Caputo made no mistake in levelling the scores. There was to be more frustration for Zenga before half-time, as a defensive error from Moisander allowed Caputo to find the net once more for 2-1.

The second half brought a host of changes, with the first 20 minutes providing little in the way of excitement. With time ticking on, Muriel cannoned an effort of the Entella crossbar with the hosts’ defence beaten. Soon afterwards, Vrioni won the Blucerchiati their second penalty of the game, with Muriel coolly slotting home for 2-2.

Samp could have had yet another penalty before full-time, but it wasn’t to be. Zenga’s men make the short trip back along the Ligurian coast with a useful run-out under their belts.
