Audero eager to improve his game

At the end of the 1980s, during a golden era for Sampdoria, it was a 20-year-old who found himself between the sticks for the Blucerchiati. That man was Gianluca Pagliuca, who would go on to become one of the greatest goalkeepers in the world, featuring in the Scudetto-winning Doria side and the Italy team that reached the final of the 1994 World Cup in the USA. Thirty years later, Emil Audero begins what he hopes can be a journey of similar proportions.

Speaking to the Serie A TV channel, the youngster said: “Serie A has strong following across the world and in particular in Indonesia, my country, where people know Sampdoria – they were one of the first teams to come here.

“There are lots of young keepers in Italy that are doing well. I hope myself that I can improve even more. This is a difficult role, because you need to be fully-focused at all times.”

Audero certainly can’t be accused of failing to focus on the task at hand, with Sampdoria currently boasting the league’s best defensive record, with only four goals conceded.
