Eder inspires Sampdoria to 2-1 victory over Roma at Marassi

Sampdoria have moved onto 10 points in the Serie A table after beating Roma by two goals to one in a pulsating encounter at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris this evening.

Correa had the first chance of the night, but the Argentine’s curling shot was easily held by De Sanctis. Roma hit back immediately, with Nainggolan thundering an effort just past the far post after a Giallorossi corner. Not to be perturbed, Doria worked chances of their own through Soriano and Muriel, before Pjanic had a crack at Viviano’s goal from distance.

The atmosphere inside Marassi went up a notch on 26 minutes as Eder went down under a challenge from Manolas, only for the Samp man to be booked for diving. Zenga could barely hide his frustration, with the Blucerchiati coach forced into an early change soon afterwards as the injured Silvestre had to be replaced by Moisander.

The second half began with a bang as Samp won a free-kick in a dangerous position. Eder stepped up and smashed home a peach to send Marassi wild – it was the Italian international’s sixth goal in five games.

Viviano was having a great game in the Sampdoria goal, adjusting his body in midair to save a Pjanic free-kick after it took a wicked deflection off Soriano. Yet the Giallorossi were throwing everything they had at the Blucerchiati defence and finally breached Viviano’s resistance after Pjanic cut back for Salah to level the scores at 1-1.

It looked like Roma might go on to claim all three points, yet there was to be a sting in the tail for the Giallorossi. Antonio Cassano, on in the 78th minute for Muriel, set Sampdoria off on a lightning counter-attack that culminated in Eder’s powerful cross being scuffed into De Sanctis’ net by Kostas Manolas on 88 minutes. Roma pushed forward again, but Samp held firm to secure a fine victory.
