Giampaolo: “Let’s take the game to Pescara”

Marco Giampaolo has urged his Sampdoria side to race out of the blocks against Pescara on Saturday as they look to return to winning ways after two draws on the spin.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Doria boss insisted it was vital that the side avoided the kind of sluggish performance seen against Palermo last time out.

“We don’t want it to be like our last game, because we didn’t do well. That’s the only match that has disappointed me as a coach and the players too,” said Giampaolo.

“We want to win this game because our goal is to be the best of the rest in the league, if you like. I take the top eight out of that, because their squads and objectives are not like ours, but the rest of the teams are reachable.”

Giampaolo stressed the importance of being able to break down opponents who simply sit back and invite pressure on.

“We got bogged down in the psychological side of things against Palermo and we let them set the tempo,” he explained. “We’ve always taken the game to our opponents this season, whether we’ve won or lost. We can’t afford to wait it out, like we did at Palermo. We’ve always taken things by the scruff of the neck and we need to continue to do that.”

It was a particularly deflating performance against Palermo given the positive vibe Giampaolo had identified during the week building up to the game.

“I was feeling positive, but I don’t think it was a loss of concentration or an attitude problem,” said the coach. “The way we started played into their hands. It was a bit like a Wild West standoff. We fell into the trap of thinking that there was plenty of time left and that something would happen, but I don’t want to see that kind of attitude again.”

Giampaolo also insisted that his side are 100% motivated for the run in.

“There’s no sign that the team is lacking motivation,” he said. “We have to make sure that the remaining 12 matches turn a good season into an excellent one. The biggest motivation is the club we play for – our respect for the history of our team. That comes before the individual. As soon as the final whistle blows, we’ll start focusing on the derby. One match at a time.”
