Ranieri: “We were in control then…”

Claudio Ranieri offered an honest assessment following Sampdoria’s 2-0 defeat at Cagliari.

“We were in control of things in the first half but then two moments changed the game: Augello’s sending off at the end of the first half and then the penalty at the start of the second,” the boss began.

“After that, Cagliari had us where they wanted us: they’re at their best when playing on the counter. Soon after their first goal we had a couple of breaks when we could have done better. It’s a shame.

“I thought the red card for Augello was clear even from the dugout but we didn’t sit back after going a man down – I dropped [Antonio] Candreva back and brought on another attacking player in [Mikkel] Damsgaard. Things were doing quite well too. I didn’t agree with the penalty but the referee is young and he’ll gain more experience.

“My players gave their all until the end, which is what I always ask of them.

“We’ve had a reasonably good start to the season but now we need to knuckle down again and try to do our best after the international break.”
