Record-man Giampaolo: “This is my Sampdoria”

First he won two out of two. Now it’s three out of three. Marco Giampaolo and Sampdoria are etching their names in the Derby della Lanterna record books. Not since Walter Novellino’s day (in Serie B) have Samp won three derbies on the trot, and to find three successive Serie A triumphs we have to go all the way back to 1953.

“It’s nice to add a few nice lines to Sampdoria history every now and then,” Giampaolo conceded after Saturday’s 2-0 victory.

“It’s hard to put into words what the derby feels like, but we’re pleased to have done our part.

“The emotions of a match like this are indescribable. If you win it, you can sleep sound. Otherwise it’s much more difficult.”

Another record is six successive victories at Marassi (five at home and one ‘away’) – something not even Samp’s golden generation achieved.

“I ask my players to aim for the top and keep improving. It’s a nice league position to be in. First and foremost, I’m happy for my players because I know what fine footballers and individuals they are.

“On a personal level I’m happy we’ve created a group that wants to succeed. I feel this is my team.”
