Samp slip to 1-0 defeat by Frosinone

Sampdoria were beaten 1-0 by Frosinone at Marassi on a frustrating afternoon for Marco Giampaolo on Sunday.

Daniel Cofani was the match-winner for the visitor, slotting home the decisive goal on 26 minutes.

Samp enjoyed the better chances of the opening period, albeit without reaching the level of attacking fluency Marco Giampaolo’s men have made us come to expect in recent weeks. Dennis Praet had a sight of goal in the very first minute, firing a snap shot wide of the post from a good position, before Fabio Quagliarella peeled off his defender to draw a save from Marco Sportiello, albeit with the linesman flagging on the far side.

The Frosinone goal came quite against the run of play, on 26 minutes. Samp had numerous chances to clear their lines but failed to definitively deal with the danger, eventually allowing Daniel Ciofani to ghost in and fire home from close range for 1-0.

Praet looked to level things up straight away with a fierce effort from the edge of the box, but Sportiello was equal to it. Doria cranked up the pressure, with Manolo Gabbiadini seeing a decent penalty shout waved away soon after, while Quagliarella reminded Frosinone of his threat when he cannoned a powerful volley off the post.

Karol Linetty was next to test Sportiello with a shot from the edge of the box, while Bartosz Bereszynski’s long-range effort flashed narrowly wide as time ran out for Samp to find an equaliser before the break.

If Giampaolo was expecting an instant reaction from his side in the second half he would have been disappointed, as Samp failed to create meaningful chances as play resumed. Having seen enough, Giampaolo turned to his bench, sending on Gaston Ramirez in place of Riccardo Saponara and replacing Gabbiadini with Gregoire Defrel.

Quagliarella has so often been the man Samp in recent weeks, and the veteran Italian nearly hauled Doria level after his lob beat Sportiello but refused to sneak in under the bar. Defrel was next to threaten, but his shot was too weak and Sportiello gathered easily, while Joachim Andersen probably should have done better as he headed straight at the Frosinone goalie following a Ramirez corner.

Giampaolo sent on Marco Sau in place of Albin Ekdal as the clock ticked down, but it was Omar Colley who had the best chance to score: the Gambian connected well with his header, but Sportiello produced a magnificent save to deny him and condemn Samp to a painful home defeat.
