Verre: “A goal for the team”

After scoring a cracker to help Sampdoria beat Verona, Valerio Verre opted to play down the quality of his goal and instead emphasise what it meant to the team.

The midfielder scored early in the second half to give Doria a two-goal cushion before the hosts pulled one back.

“I don’t score many but I won’t forget this one in a hurry,” he admitted. “However, the main thing is the team plays well. We deserved these three points. We’d been playing well recently but paid the price for switching off at times. Today we were fully focused, especially in the first half. The opening 15 minutes were crucial, then going in at the break was massive.”

Verre may say he doesn’t score many but he’s already on three for the season and all of them beauties: prior to his strike against Verona, he scored with a delightful lob in Florence and an absolute rocket against Genoa in the Coppa Italia.

“It was an important goal as it helped the team. It doesn’t matter if it’s a wonderful goal or a scrappy goal. I don’t mind scoring scrappy goals if it means I score more!”

The midfielder opted not to celebrate his goal out of respect for his former club but afterwards wanted to make special dedication.

“I’d like to dedicate this win to our fans and in particular to someone who left us too soon. Ciao Breglia.”
