World Refugee Day: Samp supporting the UNHCR

Sampdoria have teamed up with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to provide hundreds of match kits and training jerseys – for a total of 5,000 pieces of clothing – to refugees in the Kakuma camp in northwest Keyna.

At the heart of the partnership is the belief that sport is a great way for refugees to leave past traumas behind, develop and grow, as well as providing opportunities for socialising and inclusion.

The sports kit provided by Sampdoria is currently being used as part of the UNHCR’s Sport Sharing project, which has created centres where refugees can share sports clothing and equipment, practise sport, watch sport together and take each other on in eSports competitions.

“We’re grateful to UC Sampdoria for choosing to support our sports project in the Kakuma camp,” said Carlotta Sami, the UNHCR spokesperson for Italy, San Marino and Vatican City. “We’ve just marked World Refugee Day, the core message of which is that ‘together, we can do anything’. Sport isn’t just a fundamental part of the physical and mental wellbeing of every one of us, but it also plays a crucial role in promoting inclusion and understanding. It creates positive relationships between the people who have been forced to flee their homes and the members of the communities that are now hosting them.”

World Refugee Day on 20 June is an annual opportunity for the UNHCR to celebrate the strength, courage and perseverance of the millions of refugees all around the world. The UNHCR uses the day to call for people who have been forced to flee war, violence and persecution to be able to integrate fully into society – from work through to study, healthcare and sport. Their message is that refugees have skills and a sense of determination that can enrich their host communities, positioning refugees as valuable assets for society and our collective wellbeing.
