FICWC: Lonewolf departs London, Brondby win 1st eSports Club World Cup

Mattia “Lonewolf” Guarracino travels back to Italy today after yesterday’s FIFA Interactive Club World Cup. It’s fair to say the competition will live long in the memory for our gamer, especially after he proved he belongs at this level. Although he didn’t exactly get off to a flier.

Sampdoria eSports were drawn in Group A for PlayStation 4 and the fixture list certainly didn’t help. After two narrow 2-1 defeats against Ajax and Brondby to begin with – both of whom made the semi-finals – he drew against Wolfsburg.

At the Sky studios in London, home to the event, the Blucerchiati pro player dug deep to keep his hopes alive with victories over Valencia and PSV 3-2 and 4-2 respectively. Those two wins saw him finish third, just one spot off qualifying. Clearly, it wasn’t meant to be.

Lonewolf still proved he’s Italy’s top player and gave FICWC champion Marcus Jorgensen (Marcuzo45) of Brondby a real run for his money. While Samp come home empty-handed in terms of trophies, the club will be all the better for the experience.
