Doria sign off with a point at Brescia

Medhi Loris scored his first goal for the club and Fabio Quagliarella missed a penalty as Sampdoria wrapped up their 2019/20 Serie A campaign with a draw at relegated Brescia.

It was former Doria captain Daniele Gastaldello – playing his final game before hanging up his boots – who gave away the spot-kick midway through the first half as he lifted his elbow to block Ronaldo Vieira’s fierce shot. After reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, the ref awarded the penalty but the current Blucerchiati skipper – making his 200th appearance for the club – sent it narrowly wide.

Samp did take the lead before the break, however, as Leris’s shot rather fortuitously ended up in the net after deflecting off Gastaldello.

The visitors’ advantage was short-lived though, as Ernesto Torregrossa levelled matters from 12 yards four minutes into the second period after Wladimiro Falcone had felled Florian Aye.

There were chances for both sides to score a second but no winner was forthcoming as Jaromir Zmrhal struck the post and Quagliarella had a 95th-minute winner ruled out for offside.

Doria thus end the season on 42 points – comfortably avoiding relegation, which is the main thing.
