FIFA Puskas Award: Quagliarella nominated for goal of the year

Fabio Quagliarella is on FIFA’s shortlist for this year’s Puskas Award for his stunning backheeled finish against Napoli – a goal of such rare, unadulterated beauty that quite frankly it would have been shocking if he had not been included.

The Samp skipper joins nine other candidates in the running for the prestigious annual award – named after the Hungary and Real Madrid legend – given to the scorer of the best goal of the season.

Quagliarella is in with a chance of winning – and we can all help him claim the prize. It would be further recognition for a player who has dedicated his career to producing eye-popping, jaw-dropping moments of skill that remain forever engrained in the memory of football lovers. Like the magic he conjured up at the Marassi on 2 September last year.
