President Ferrero: “I apologise to everyone, the only winners are the fans”

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero spoke to the press after this evening’s 0-4 defeat by Vojvodina: “All I can say is thanks to the fans, who were fantastic throughout. We deserved to lose and I can only apologise. It was an off match from us. After the summer friendlies and excitement for the new season, tonight’s game was a complete blackout. This isn’t my Samp – it’s not the strong team we’ve built and intend to strengthen still.

“Maybe it’s written in the stars for us to not progress. But we have another match to play and you can never say never in football. I’m convinced that we have a strong team here. We’ll make some reinforcements but they won’t be able to play in the second leg. The only winners tonight are the fans, who were once again so generous in their support.”
