Sampdoria captain Angelo Palombo speaks: “Nothing went right”

Blucerchiati captain Angelo Palombo pulled no punches in his assessment of Sampdoria’s performance against Vojvodina this evening, stating simply: “Nothing went right, nothing worked.”

There was a word for the fans, who were fantastic throughout the match: “We feel embarrassed. It’s a shame, most of all for the fans, who deserved a European run after so many years. To speak about fitness would be to try and make excuses and I don’t like that. We’ll go for it in the return leg.”

Palombo was in no mood to sugar-coat the defeat: “It’s the fault of all of us out there on the field. We weren’t expecting such a bad start. We had high hopes and it hurts now. It had been a while since I’d played in central defence but I’ve played there throughout my career.

“The first goal was a personal error and I’ve got my qualms about admitting that. There are no excuses – not the transfer market, not Cassano, not anything. Our attitude was wrong and our performance was wrong,” declared Palombo.
