Montella: “We’re angry, we played well and have nothing to show for it”

“This defeat hurts.” The frustration is written all over Vincenzo Montella’s face who cannot accept a defeat in this manner.

“We mustn’t lose our self-belief,” urged the Blucerchiati gaffer. “Yet again we have put in a good performance. We were clearly better than Inter over 90 minutes. Of course, we made mistakes but that display shows the level we’re capable of. We just need to be more careful.

“There are two areas where we need to improve: positivity in the final third and being on our guard in defence.

“The quality in the team is there for all to see,” Montella insisted. “That’s not enough, however. We have to do more.

“I obviously cannot be serene about this, the league table doesn’t make for pleasant reading. However, we need to get rid of the air of fear lingering about us.

“You shouldn’t be going home with nothing to show for it after performances like that. We can only be angry after nights like these.”

The statistics paint a clear picture: the lion share of possession and more shots on goal indicate a Sampdoria team that dictated the match.

“This is how our team has to play,” the Aeroplanino declared. “We have to take advantage of fortune and not fall victim to it. We are not losers.

“It’s not easy to teach being clinical in front of goal, it’s something you have to have inside of you.

“I’m working on Luis Muriel, potentially he’s a top-class player. He had a great impact but also lost the ball stupidly on one occasion. Having said that, I can see he’s changed a great deal. He’s got goals and assists in his locker, as he hinted today.”
