Montella reacts to Viola draw: “We’ve secured a vital point and are closer to safety”

It was a happy return to Fiorentina for Vincenzo Montella, who received a round of applause from the home fans before watching his Sampdoria side secure an important point on Sunday afternoon.

“We’ve earnt a vital point. It’s a better result for us than for Fiorentina, no doubt about that. We produced a quality performance and this draw will help us to finish the season in the best way possible,” said Montella after the game.

“I’m delighted with the way we played, even though we could have won had we had a bit more luck with Quagliarella’s late strike. It was lovely to get the reception from the Fiorentina fans – it’s nice that people have positive memories of you. I had some lovely years here and there was a great relationship with the fans, it’s just a shame the way it ended,” continued the Samp coach.

“Safety is closer for us now. You can see the signs of improvement from the team every week. We still need more results between now and the end of the season, however,” Montella concluded.
