Superman Viviano earns Sampdoria huge point at Sassuolo

It took a gargantuan performance from Emiliano Viviano but Sampdoria succeeded in leaving Mapei Stadium with a point – despite making life difficult for themselves. First a silly red card (Ranocchia midway through the first half), then a silly penalty (given away by Krsticic at the death), but thankfully Viviano’s big gloves came good. Time and again.

After a slow start to the game, the ref decided a bit of colour was needed and started to flash the cards: Diakite, Dodo and Ranocchia were all booked in the space of five minutes.

De Silvestri went close with a fine shot then Ranocchia saw red after catching Defrel in the face with his foot.

Samp adjusted well to playing a man down but Viviano had to be alert to save Barreto’s blushes when the midfielder almost sliced the ball into his own net. The keeper was called into action again soon after to keep out Peluso’s effort from a corner.

Montella rejigged his side during the interval, taking off Correa and bringing on Silvestre. The script didn’t change much though as Viviano continued to be the star of the show, parrying away Trotta’s firm blast eight minutes after the restart.

Down the other end, Muriel was forced to go it alone but he still managed to draw a sigh of relief from the home crowd after a mazy run.

Samp began to tire as the numerical inferiority took its toll. Fortunately Vivano didn’t. As resolute as ever, he thwarted Magnanelli, Acerbi and Sansone in turn.

Then, just minutes from full time, Krsticic upended Berardi in the box and Mariani pointed to the spot. Up stepped Berardi to take it but – once again – our No.1 was not to be beaten.

Thank you, Emiliano. It’s a point worth its weight in gold and you delivered it.
