Euro 2016: Skriniar’s Slovakia to take on Germany in last 16

Doria past will meet Doria present (and future) when Slovakia face off against Germany on Sunday.

Shkodran Mustafi, who spent two and a half years in Samp colours and scored Germany’s opening goal in their 2-0 win over Ukraine, versus Milan Skriniar, who made his Euro 2016 debut in Monday’s 0-0 draw with England.

The 21-year-old Slovak defender played his part in earning his team a crucial point that enabled them to take their place in the round of 16 as one of the best third-placed sides. Germany meanwhile qualified as winners of Group C, having not conceded a goal in three games.

Joachim Low’s men will be looking to set the record straight after their most recent meeting with the Slovaks – a friendly on 29 May – ended in a 3-1 defeat.

The winners of Sunday’s match at Lille’s Stade Pierre Mauroy (18:00 CEST kick-off) will be rewarded with a contest against either Italy or Spain.

In the meantime Skriniar has spoken of his joy and surprise at making his tournament debut the other night.

“I was thrilled to be going out there to play but I had to focus all my thoughts on helping my team-mates because we had to hold onto the result.

“It’s good that the gaffer placed his trust in me in such an important game – he’s shown that confidence in me since the start.

“A few weeks back, I’d never even have imagined going to the Euros let alone playing. I’ve realised a dream but I don’t want to stop here. Individually and as a team we still have a lot left to prove.”
