Quagliarella setting the standard: “Great to be the league’s current leading goalscorer”

Fabio Quagliarella’s two goals this evening lifted him onto 110 strikes overall in Serie A, the most out of everyone still playing in the Italian top flight.

If Giampaolo Pazzini, second on 108, sent out a message on Saturday evening, Sampdoria’s No.27 responded in the perfect manner, making it very clear he’s going nowhere.

“It’s a great feeling being the current topscorer in the league,” Quagliarella said after the game. “You can see I’ve done something good in my career. Setting a new personal record for the season would be nice, that could be an added stimulus.”

The striker also offered his thoughts on tonight’s opening game of the season against Benevento.

“We did well to stick together and continue to play our game,” he continued. “Equalising just before half-time was important and we managed to do it. It’s understandable you’re not on top form in the first few games.”

He wrapped up his post-match interview with some words of praise for his new partner in attack, Gaston Ramirez.

“What do I think of Ramirez? That was an exceptional assist; he’s a great player.”
