Torreira wins Tweet Fighter crown

The first edition of “Tweet Fighter – @sampdoria_en edition” reached its climax on Saturday night with a victory for #ThanksForTorreira.

The initiative was run by Sampdoria’s international Twitter account and aimed to provide some light entertainment for the Doria faithful while the world remains on lockdown. Tweet Fighter pitted 16 of the account’s best tweets against each other as part of a knock-out competition, with over 500 votes cast by fans along the way.

The #ThanksForTorreira tweet was dreamt up by the @sampdoria_en in response to the many messages of thanks the club received from Arsenal fans in the wake of Lucas Torreira’s move to the North London club. Samp set up a special email address for fans to direct their gratitude to – attracting over 100 messages.

#ThanksForTorreira scored 60% of the vote in the grand final, edging out the #WelcomeRonaldo tweet used to announce the signing of Ronaldo Vieira in the summer of 2018. The tweet generated more than 10,000 retweets – the most ever recorded by @sampdoria_en.

Torreira’s other victims included Dilly Ding Dilly Dong, the tweet used to announce the arrival of Claudio Ranieri as manager, and Genoa Balloon Girl, a Banksy-inspired dig at rivals Genoa after another derby win for the Blucerchiati. High-profile figures such as Sergio Ramos, Peter Crouch and Connor McGregor were also featured in the tweets involved.

A big thank you to everyone who got involved by voting for our best-ever tweet – so far!
