Verre: “We needed to win. Now we must kick on”

His first goal for Sampdoria was a while in coming but certainly worth the wait. Valerio Verre’s strike against Fiorentina – the deftest of lobbed finishes – was worthy of one of the former Roma youth product’s idols, Francesco Totti. And meant even more because it was worth three points.

“We were playing a really good team but we needed to win,” the midfielder said after the final whistle. “We made a bad start to the season with two poor performances and we really needed the three points. We did what we had to do and we did it by playing as a team.”

What about that goal, though?

“It was a nice goal. I knew [Emil] Audero would hit it long first time and I saw their backline pushing up. I brought it down well and then lobbed the keeper. Very nice!

“We knew we had to get our mentality right – that’s what the boss told us. Now we must kick on from here. We’ll enjoy this win and get going again even stronger with the new signings.”
