Quagliarella on scoring his 100th Serie A goal: “I’ll remember this day forever”

Fabio Quagliarella scored his 100th Serie A goal as Sampdoria beat Sassuolo 3-2 at Marassi on Sunday.

The Doria forward has come full circle since his first goal in the top flight, scored during his time at Ascoli – with Marco Giampaolo in the dugout.

“It was an extraordinary game,” acknowledged Quagliarella after the final whistle. “It seemed done and dusted with ten minutes to go, but we did really well and never stopped believing. I would never have dreamed of scoring my 100th Serie A goal in a match like that. I’ll remember this day forever.”

Quagliarella heaped praise on his team-mates after they came back from 2-0 down to snatch a dramatic late win.

“It’s not easy to come back from two goals down to beat Sassuolo,” said the Italian striker. “We had to be at our best. We all believe in what we’re doing, we’re right behind the boss and with the help of the fans we know we can achieve big things.”

The Samp striker showed admirable selflessness in squaring for Luis Muriel to tap home the equaliser, but Quagliarella brushed off the plaudits.

“The most important thing was making sure we didn’t lose. I think I’m one of the least egotistical strikers in the league!”
