Quagliarella: “Giampaolo is our top player. It’s been a great year”

He may have scored the penalty that clinched the win, but Fabio Quagliarella was in no doubt over who deserved the plaudits after Samp pulled off another comeback victory against Inter.

“Giampaolo is one of the best in the business – he’s our top player,” the veteran striker observed.

“I’ve learnt something from all my coaches and I’m sure he’ll go on to have a fantastic career. You can see his hand in the team in every game. We don’t talk much but he knows he can count on me until the end.”

Against AC Milan it was Luis Muriel who drove home the winning spot-kick; today it was his turn, after Inter had led 1-0 at half time and Patrik Schick had scored the equaliser.

“We never give up, that’s why we keep managing to win games despite going behind,” Quagliarella continued.

“No one should play Samp and think they’re going to win – that’s something the boss has drummed into us. We’re carrying out his instructions and the results are there to see. It’s been a great year.

“Today’s win is another historic achievement and we’re proud of it.”

The captain was asked what changes for him playing alongside Schick as opposed to Luis Muriel.

“Patrik helps out more defensively – I have to run more when I play with Luis!

“The thing that impresses me most about Schick is just how level-headed he is. Even when he makes a mistake he never lets it get to him. That’s a great attribute to have, especially as a striker.”
