Football Data, Lazio v Sampdoria stat attack

Italy’s leading football statistics agency gives us the lowdown on Sunday’s Serie A Week 35 encounter at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio have the upper hand

Lazio have much the better record in previous meetings between the two sides in Rome, with 30 wins (the most recent a 3-0 victory in 2014/15), 15 draws (1-1 in 2015/16) and nine defeats (1-2 in 2004/05).

Since Samp’s last success at the Olimpico (1-2 on 23 January 2005), the Biancocelesti have hosted the Blucerchiati ten times (excluding the 2008/09 Coppa Italia final) and triumphed on eight occasions, with just two draws (both 1-1).

Lazio have scored in each of their last 22 home matches against Sampdoria (excluding the 2008/09 Coppa Italia final), notching 47 goals in total. The last time they drew a blank was on 27 August 1989: Lazio 0-2 Sampdoria in Serie A.

Inzaghi versus Giampaolo

Simone Inzaghi has won on both previous occasions when he has faced off against Marco Giampaolo.

Samp’s worst run in second half of 2016/17

Sampdoria haven’t won in their last four games (two draws and two defeats) since beating Inter 2-1 at the Stadio Meazza on 3 April. It’s the Blucerchiati’s longest stretch without a victory in the second half of the 2016/17 season.

One defeat in 12 for Lazio

Inzaghi’s men go into the game in great form and are close to securing a Europa League berth via the league (regardless of what happens in the Coppa Italia final against Juventus). They have lost just once (0-3 away to Napoli on 9 April) in their last 12 matches, with eight wins and three draws.

Lazio share the goals around whereas Samp…

Lazio have had more goal scorers in the current Serie A campaign than any other side. The 17 names on the Biancocelesti score sheet after 34 games are Anderson, Basta, Biglia, Cataldi, Crecco, De Vrij, Hoedt, Immobile, Keita, Lombardi, Luis Alberto, Lulic, Milinkovic Savic, Murgia, Parolo, Radu, Wallace.

Sampdoria meanwhile have scored with the fewest number of players – just seven (Alvarez, Barreto, Fernandes, Muriel, Praet, Quagliarella, Schick).

Immobile targeting personal record

Ciro Immobile is close to equalling his personal best Serie A goals haul in a single campaign. The Italy striker is currently on 20 goals this season, two shy of the 22 he netted for Torino in 2013/14.

Giampaolo’s super subs

Sampdoria have scored more goals through players coming off the bench in 2016/17 than any other Serie A team. The Blucerchiati’s 10 substitute goals have been scored by Patrik Schick (six), Bruno Fernandes (three) and Ricky Alvarez (one).

Man in the middle

Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni has been appointed to oversee Sunday’s clash at the Stadio Olimpico. He has officiated Lazio matches 26 times before this weekend, with 13 wins, six draws and six defeats for the Biancocelesti. Sampdoria’s record from 17 games with Mazzoleni is W6, D5, L6.
