Torreira bags a brace: “What a double. Uruguay will come calling”
Goals for Sampdoria are like London buses for Lucas Torreira. The diminutive Uruguayan waited more than 4,000 minutes in all competitions to open his Sampdoria account and then his second goal for the Blucerchiati came along less than an hour later.
The two strikes themselves were memorable too. First he smashed home a free-kick from 25 yards, before adding a second late on as Sampdoria had a goal reviewed by the VAR system for the first time. “This is a double to remember,” said the playmaker. “I’m delighted to have finally found the net.”
We’re used to seeing Lucas pinging balls around midfield but goals are a new addition to his repertoire. “When I saw that Sorrentino wasn’t putting up a wall and Strinic wasn’t coming over for our set-piece routine, I decided to shoot,” revealed the midfielder. “Then the ball found the top corner. On the second one, I had to wait for the referee to give it and I expected him to rule it out. It counted though. I want to dedicate this performance to a friend of mine who’s also called Lucas who came to Genoa with me. A special mention goes to my family too.”
Next up it’s the Derby della Lanterna. “We face a tough match on Saturday,” concluded Torreira. “Then we have the international break. I’m dreaming of playing in the World Cup with my dad commentating. I’m sure I’ll get a call-up sooner or later.”
