Giampaolo: “We matched a great Lazio side”
Marco Giampaolo insisted that his Sampdoria team deserved something from their 2-1 defeat to Lazio at Marassi on Sunday, after Simone Inzaghi’s Biancocelesti side completed a late comeback to bring Doria’s unbeaten run at home to an end.
“It’s a tough defeat to take,” began the Doria coach after the game. “We made a few mistakes but our performance was very good and we could have gone 2-0 up. The players gave everything. Fine margins are part and parcel of football and they went against us tonight. We need to work on a few things from a tactical and technical standpoint.”
Despite the result, Giampaolo was keen to take the positives after a good performance against a high-flying Lazio team.
“We matched a great side,” said the coach. “They’re physically strong and can use that to control games – you don’t win so many matches on the road if you can’t dominate. We may even have had the edge on them a bit tonight and that was partly down to the fans. It didn’t go our way tonight, but the fans know that we always have a chance here at the stadium.”
