A day to forget for Giampaolo: “Massive disappointment, we showed the wrong mentality”

Marco Giampaolo was far from satisfied with what he saw against Benevento this afternoon, brooding over what went wrong in his post-match interview.

“The second half wasn’t up to scratch,” he began simply, pulling no punches. “After a good start, we showed poor character and made mistakes. Maybe we’re overreaching ourselves. However, we mustn’t give up but strive to get better. We’re a good side, but we lack mental strength when we’re billed as favourites.

“You must be able to deal with your position in the league, it involves certain responsibilities,” Giampaolo continued. “We have to make that step-up in quality. Going into the winter break on the back of a defeat isn’t good because you can’t work it off, so it’ll be on our minds for the next fortnight.

“As for the transfer window, the club has some decisions to make but I don’t want to overhaul everything. I remain satisfied with my players and this squad, although I’m disappointed with this defeat.

“We’ve got the whole second half of the season to go. Mentally we have to be strong considering where we are in the league. Maybe the fact we’ve climbed this high has taken away the carefree approach we had at the start of the season, myself above all.

“We’ll have to revisit some things from a psychological point of view, rather than any technical, tactical or physical matters.

“The sense of disappointment is massive,” the Blucerchiati coach concluded, “there’s nothing worse than letting down the people who believe in you. That’s what we did today to the fans who followed us here. We should not have lost this game.”
