Inter run riot at Marassi as Samp slump to heavy defeat
It was a day to forget for Sampdoria at Marassi on Sunday as Inter inflicted a 5-0 defeat on Marco Giampaolo’s side.
Ivan Perisic opened the scoring for Inter, while Mauro Icardi scored four back at his old club as Samp’s resistance crumbled under the pressure.
Inter were in control from the off, working a number of good chances in the early stages. Emiliano Viviano did well to keep the scores level for as long as he did, denying both Ivan Perisic and Danilo D’Ambrosio before Joao Cancelo saw his corner ricochet back off the frame of the goal.
Inter’s first goal came on 27 minutes, with Perisic heading past Viviano and into the back of the net, and there was more misery three minutes later as Barreto brought down Rafinha in the box, giving Icardi the chance to make it 2-0 from the spot. The Argentine duly obliged.
The Nerazzurri were rampant now, with Icardi backheeling home for 3-0 on 32 minutes and then smashing a rebound high into the roof of the net seconds before the half-time whistle. For Samp, the task was already one of damage limitation.
Yet the second half brought more misery, as Icardi added a fifth goal six minutes after the restart.
That proved to be the last of the scoring, as Samp did at least manage to see out the rest of the game without further damage.
