Viviano: “We concede too many goals but we want to keep pushing”

Emiliano Viviano has admitted that Sampdoria’s recent defensive performances have not been good enough, while insisting that the team will continue to give everything it has from now until the end of the season.

“We concede goals too easily and we could have avoided the last two against Lazio,” said the Samp keeper, speaking after Doria’s 4-0 defeat at the hands of Lazio on Sunday. “We could have come away with a 2-1 defeat. It’s important we stay focused during games.

“Our brand of football is about taking risks – sometimes that results in great performances, other times it doesn’t. That said, we were up against a very good side today.”

The result sees Samp’s Europa League hopes grow fainter, but there is still every chance of the Blucerchiati making a late charge towards sixth spot.

“Let’s try to win every game and then we’ll see,” said Viviano, who was wearing the captain’s armband against Lazio. “European football wasn’t our objective at the start of the season, but we’re up there. We want to cause teams problems and win every game – I think we need ten points.

Viviano also had a word for young Joachim Andersen, who has enjoyed more playing time recently.

“He’s a good player,” said Viviano. “He’s an intelligent lad with lots of potential. He can do the same sort of thing [Milan] Skriniar did, but he’s his own guy too.”
