Dominant Samp put Cagliari to the sword

After a disappointing 4-0 defeat last time out against Lazio, Marco Giampaolo’s side bounced back to dominate Sunday’s contest against Cagliari, emerging 4-1 winners.

Three first-half goals against their relegation-threatened opponents set Sampdoria off on their way to securing a comfortable win, despite an early second-period surge from the Sardinians.

Dennis Praet got Doria off to flying start with a goal after just 7 minutes, collecting Fabio Quagliarella’s pass before producing a clever turn on the edge of the box and firing a low shot into the bottom corner. The goal was the Belgian’s first of this league season.

Having helped create Doria’s first, it was Quagliarella who netted the second. Edgar Barreto’s pass deflected through to Karol Linetty, whose ball across the face of goal was converted from close range by the Samp front-man.

Giampaolo’s men did not let up in their search for goals, even as the first-half drew to a close. In the final moments of the period Bartosz Bereszynski broke down the right hand side before finding his compatriot Dawid Kownacki in the area. The latter finished with a first-time volley, high into the Cagliari net.

The Sardinians looked to fight their way back into the contest at the start of the second half and were able to pull a goal back with less than 50 minutes of the match played. Leonardo Pavoletti bundled the ball home at the back post after a low cross from the right.

Samp were able to contain the Cagliari revival and any lingering hopes of a fightback from the away side were extinguished on 78 minutes as Luca Cigarini, the former Doria man, was sent off for a second bookable offence, when he caught Gaston Ramirez with his arm.

Ramirez, who had come on to replace an injured Quagliarella, rounded off a dominant display on 87 minutes. Kownacki was denied by the cross-bar but the Urguayan was on hand to smash home with his left foot.

It was a fitting way to cap a pleasing performance from Samp, who keep their hopes of snatching a Europa League place alive.
