Giampaolo refuses to lie down: “Let’s cling onto the train until the end”

We’re approaching the final few stops of a journey full of surprises, but Marco Giampaolo is clear about what he wants against a Sassuolo side battling to stay up.

“We have to cling onto the train,” the coach began, “even though we don’t have a ticket and the inspector wants to chuck us off.”

Sassuolo have been impossible to pigeonhole this season: on the one hand they’ve got the worst attack in the league but on the other, they’ve pulled off results against Inter, Roma, AC Milan and away against Sampdoria in the reverse fixture.

“Earlier on in the season, we lost against them right at the death, through an easily avoidable goal,” Giampaolo continued. “Sassuolo have changed the way they play since that game, but until it’s mathematically certain, they can’t consider themselves safe, so they’ll be ready for battle.”

The Blucerchiati are not without their own problems going into this fixture, as a dearth of striking options threatens to derail the European dream.

“Out of four strikers, one is fit and that’s Kownacki, while I hope Caprari and Quagliarella can pull off a miracle to make themselves available even if they’re not fully fit.

“We’re going into this fixture with a few problems,” Giampaolo concluded, “but this is not the time to whine about it. We need to be pragmatic and focused in order to keep the dream alive and repay the fans who are coming in large numbers to support us.”
