Kownacki: “Pleased to score but the result isn’t good enough”

Dawid Kownacki’s consolation goal was one of the few positives Samp can take from their final game of the Serie A season – but the Pole insisted his overriding feeling was one of disappointment after Doria’s 3-1 defeat to SPAL on Sunday.

“I’m pleased with the goal but it’s a shame about the result,” he said. “It was an uphill task for us after the penalty and red card. We’ve finished up tenth after losing our last three games of the season – we deserved more.”

It has been an impressive first season in Italy for the young striker, who is hoping to secure a spot in Poland’s 23-man World Cup squad this summer.

“Personally I’m happy with my first season in Italy,” he said. “I’ve scored five in Serie A and three in the Coppa Italia, plus I was only getting a few minutes here and there at the start of the campaign. Now I turn my attentions to fighting for a place in the Poland squad for the World Cup.
