Sampdoria register Serie A win number 700 with Frosinone thrashing

The Blucerchiati could not have secured their 700th Serie A win much more emphatically than they did away at Frosinone on Saturday evening. The home side were put to the sword by a rampant Sampdoria side, who emerged convincing 5-0 winners and picked up their first away victory since 3 April.

No side has scored more than Sampdoria’s eight goals so far in this league campaign and the potency of Marco Giampaolo’s attack is thanks in no small part to the contribution of captain Fabio Quagliarella. The forward scored his 50th for the club and now ranks 39th in the all-time Serie A scoring chart.

It was his goal on eleven minutes that sent Doria on the road to victory and it followed a well-worked move, with Gianluca Caprari surging forward before finding Edgar Barreto, whose first-time ball across the face of goal was converted by Quagliarella.

Having taken a slender 1-0 advantage into the break, it was in the second half that Giampaolo’s players really made their superiority show. Caprari struck within minutes of the start of the period, volleying home Quagliarella’s cross from the left.

Gregoire Defrel then bagged his third goal of the season, after latching onto a ball into the right channel. He cut inside onto his left foot, leaving one Frosinone defender for dead, before firing low beyond keeper Marco Sportiello.

In the final ten minutes, Samp added to the home side’s woes, with both Dawid Kownacki and Defrel finding the net. The former stroked home a spot kick after he was fouled in the corner of the area, while the Frenchman doubled his tally by tapping home Gaston Ramirez’s cross.

An outstanding attacking performance from Doria, earned with goals of the highest quality.
