Giampaolo delighted with defensive solidity: “Excellent at keeping shape under pressure”

Marco Giampaolo wanted his players to deliver their best against Atalanta, knowing full well how difficult it is to face Gianpiero Gasperini’s team on their turf, and that was exactly what he got.

The Blucerchiati were terrific today, careful in defence without ever conceding too much to the opponents while Max Tonelli did the business at the other end.

“This is an important victory,” Giampaolo began, “it was a difficult game but we did well to keep our structure even when the going got tough.

“Atalanta are a strong, physical side, but we never stopped playing our football. The team showed a lot of fight and controlled the match.

“It was the first time we had kicked off at 15:00 this season, so it was hot but we even managed to finish the game with intensity. I want to compliment the lads.”

Giampaolo was also asked about whether Sampdoria can hold onto their spot in the Champions League spaces.

“We’re looking at the league table only to grow in self-confidence and continue to improve,” the coach concluded. “I’ve got 11 internationals, which means we can look to the future with positivity and determination to get better.”
