Defrel revels in decisive derby-day contribution

Ten goals for the season. Three in the past month. One that proved truly decisive in Sampdoria’s derby win on Sunday.

Grégoire Defrel’s early goal got Doria off to a perfect start against their cross-town rivals and he was understandably delighted speaking after the contest.

“We started well – we scored early and it was wonderful. You develop a feeling of what the game means in the lead up, so it’s normal for there to be pressure. Then there’s a sense of freedom when you’re out on the field,” he said.

“I feel good – I have to thank the boss for his faith. I’m grateful to him, my team-mates and all the staff, who stuck by me when things weren’t going so well, partly due to fatigue. I want to keep going until the end.”

As for the race for European spots, the attacker adds: “We’ll try to get as many points as we can. The longer we keep in touch, the longer we can carry on believing.”

Meanwhile, on his strike partner Fabio Quagliarella, he commented: “He’s not just about goals. He has great game vision – he’s laid on many assists this year.

“I think he should buy me dinner tonight, given the penalty incident too. I really hope he can be top scorer.

“Now we need to go to Bologna to win. Let’s see what happens.”
