International break: latest results for Samp contingent

With the international break now drawing to a close, it’s time for us to round up the final batch of results of the Sampdoria stars who have been in action around the world over the past few days.

Czech Republic

Jakub Jankto’s Czech Republic side recorded a convincing 2-0 win over Slovakia in Plzen to secure their promotion to League A of the UEFA Nations League. Jankto started the game and remained on the field until the 74th minute, providing an assist for the opener from Tomas Soucek on 17 minutes. Zdenek Ondrasek added the second on 55 minutes.

Norway

Kristoffer Askildsen came off the bench as Norway were held to a 1-1 draw in Austria in Group 1, League B of the UEFA Nations League. Ghayas Zahid gave Norway the lead just after the hour mark and looked to have set his side on the way to winning the group, but a late equaliser from Adrian Grbic – in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time – meant it was Austria who secured promotion to League A. Askildsen replaced Zahid on 81 minutes.

Poland

Bartosz Bereszynski was an unused substitute as Poland were beaten 2-1 by Holland in Chorzow. Kamil Jozwiak gave the home side the lead on six minutes, but the Oranje turned things around in the second half as Memphis Depay equalised from the penalty spot on 77 minutes before Georginio Wijnaldum struck the winner seven minutes later. Italy’s win over Bosnia & Herzegovina meant the result in Poland had no bearing on the final standings in Group 1, League A, with Italy advancing to the UEFA Nations League finals as group winners.

Gambia

There was a vital win for Omar Colley and Gambia at the Independence Stadium in Bakau, where they beat Gabon 2-1 to secure a vital three points for their African Cup of Nations qualification campaign. Goals from Modou Barrow and Mousa Barrow for Gambia meant that Bruno Ecuele Manga’s late consolation remained just that – allowing Gambia to draw level with Gabon on seven points at the top of their group. Colley started the game and wore the captain’s armband.

Japan

Maya Yoshida’s Japan side were beaten 2-0 in a friendly by Mexico in Graz, with Raul Jimenez and Hirving Lozano scoring a five-minute salvo for the Central American side shortly after the hour mark. The Doria centre-back played the full 90 minutes and captained the side.

Slovenia U21s

Nik Prelec started and scored as Slovenia U21s drew 2-2 with Russia. Prelec’s inch-perfect strike opened the scoring on 17 minutes – on his debut for the U21s – before the Russians equalised through Zelimkhan Bakaev on 65 minutes. David Brekalo restored Slovenia’s advantage four minutes later, but Danil Glebov equalised again for Russia on 73 minutes.
