Ranieri predicts a ‘tactical’ derby

Claudio Ranieri believes Wednesday’s Genoa derby – the 105th Derby della Lanterna – will be a fiery, tactical affair despite the absence of the fans in Marassi.

Speaking to the media ahead of Sampdoria’s Serie A Week 25 fixture, he said: “The derby is unique – a game that gets under your skin.

“It’s always a privilege to be involved in this match. It’s just a shame we have to play it with no fans again because it feels completely different without their passion and the atmosphere they create.”

The boss went on to discuss his side’s recent form and what he thinks of Genoa.

“We’ve lost the last two against Lazio and Atalanta but I expect good things from the team because we did well in both games despite losing.

“Genoa have picked up since Ballardini returned – he got them clicking straight away. We’re close together so neither side is favourite.

“It’ll be a great match and a very difficult one. I expect it to be very tactical because we’re playing for local bragging rights and neither side wants to lose. Whichever team can find that little bit extra will win it.”
