Ranieri tells team to push on despite Napoli disappointment

Claudio Ranieri was understandably disappointed after his side came away empty handed after a hard-fought encounter with Champions League-chasing Napoli on Sunday.

Speaking after the game, he said: “We tried to do our best, despite the lack of a playmaker in midfield. The boys did well in the first 30 minutes but we couldn’t keep up that high level of pressure. After their goal, we could have conceded more.

“In the second half I changed the formation and we were able to screen them better. The disallowed goal? I can accept the decision regarding the push on the goalkeeper, but on their second goal [Dries] Mertens fouled [Morten] Thorsby.

“We must continue to fight for every ball and in every match: the aim must be those 52 points I’ve been repeating.”

“We put in a good display,” the coach continued, adding: “I’m happy despite the regret of not getting any points. This is not a step backwards from the display at San Siro, it’s a continuation.

“Milan were more tired than Napoli, who are a team with great quality and know what they’re fighting for. In short, I’m happy with how my team did, amid their difficulties. We even drew level before VAR intervened. The future? Let’s see.”
