Euro 2020: First win for Ekdal, Bereszynski still in the running

The four Sampdoria players involved at Euro 2020 have now all played their second group games, so let’s take a look at how they got on.

Bartosz Bereszynski’s Poland fought back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Spain and keep their hopes of going through to the Round of 16 alive. Alvaro Morata put La Roja 1-0 up in Seville on 25 minutes, but Robert Lewandowski struck nine minutes into the second half to haul Paulo Sousa’s Poland level. Gerard Moreno missed a penalty for Spain soon afterwards allowing Poland to hang on for the draw. Bereszynski played the full 90 minutes. Poland must beat Sweden in their final group game to be in with a chance of advancing to the next round.

Jakub Jankto’s Czech Republic drew 1-1 with Croatia in Glasgow, meaning the Czechs move onto four points to all but secure their place in the net round. Former Samp man Patrik Schick put Czech Republic ahead from the spot on 37 minutes, but Ivan Perisic equalised just after the restart to ensure the spoils were shared. Jankto started the game and was substituted on 72 minutes.

An Emil Forsberg penalty 15 minutes from time was enough for Albin Ekdal’s Sweden to beat Slovakia 1-0 in Saint Petersburg. Ekdal started the game and played for the majority of the contest before being replaced on 88 minutes. Sweden are on four points and have one foot in the Round of 16.

Mikkel Damsgaard’s Denmark side dominated the first half against Belgium in Copenhagen – and went in 1-0 up at half time after an early goal from Yussuf Poulsen – but a second-half fightback from Belgium eventually saw them slip to a second defeat in as many games. Thorgen Hazard struck on 55 minutes before Kevin De Bruyne completed the turnaround in the 70th minute to leave Denmark needing a win in their final game to have any chance of going through. Damsgaard started the game and was replaced in the 72nd minute.
