Ranieri not getting carried away: “Another 31 points to be safe”

Claudio Ranieri was understandably pleased after Sampdoria made it three straight wins with an impressive 3-1 victory at Atalanta but also keen to keep his side’s feet firmly on the ground.

“We played well after struggling a bit in the first 20 minutes,” the boss began. “After that we grew in confidence and belief. Atalanta have 22 lions and if you’re not careful they can tear you apart. I’m happy with the lads’ performance.

“We mustn’t be afraid. We performed well against Fiorentina and Lazio and I ask the lads to always play with courage.

“It’s too early to be looking at the league table. We need another 31 points before we’re safe. We spent too much of last season with our heads below water. We need to do things well from the start this year.”

Asked about the upcoming game against Genoa, Ranieri added: “We know how much the derby means to the fans. We must erase the defeat from last season.”
