Samp beaten in Derby della Lanterna
The Derby della Lanterna was a fast-paced contest that didn’t go Samp’s way in the end, as the visitors earnt a 2-1 win on a rainy Wednesday evening in Genoa.
Davide Nicola’s made a fast start at the Marassi and were given a golden chance to take the lead when Omar Colley was adjudged to have fouled Goran Pandev in the area in the 20th minute. Domenico Criscito made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Claudio Ranieri’s charges got back on level terms in the 32nd minute when Karol Linetty’s shot was blocked by Criscito and landed in the path of in-form Manolo Gabbiadini who tucked away his third goal in this fixture. The two teams went in all square at the interval after Genoa had a goal ruled out for offside on the stroke of half-time.
The winner came in the 72nd minute when Lukas Lerager struck a low shot from the edge of the box that beat Emil Audero at his near post with what would turn out to be the winner.
It was Sampdoria’s first defeat in this fixture in five years and while it still hurts, it hurts a bit less knowing that the club is safe from relegation.
