Samp suffer painful defeat as Bologna win 2-1

Claudio Ranieri’s men fell to their third defeat in the space of eight days in their clash with Bologna on Sunday, and it is without doubt the most painful of the three. After narrow losses away at Inter and Roma, Doria would have been hopeful of getting crucial points on the board when hosting Siniša Mihajlović’s team, but it wasn’t to be as the away side struck two quickfire second half goals to earn what proved to be an unassailable lead. The result felt harsh on the Blucerchiati, who seemed to have a foothold in the game but were punished for fleeting losses of focus and left it too late to haul themselves level.

After a balanced first 45 minutes that ended goal-less, Bologna got their noses in front on 72 minutes through Musa Barrow. He side-footed home from the penalty spot after the referee blew for Nicola Murru’s foul on Riccardo Orsolini.  Barrow and Orsolini were involved heavily in the crucial second goal just three minutes later. The former weaved his way into the Doria box and saw his attempted cross from the left deflected right onto the head of the Italian, who had the easiest of tasks to put the ball into the net from close range.

Samp were able to half the deficit in the 88th minute, when Federico Bonazzoli rose highest and got his head to a curling cross from the left from Tommaso Augello. It was a well taken goal from the substitute but in truth it came too late in the game for the home side, who were unable to push on and claim an equaliser in the few remaining minutes. Ranieri’s men will hope to bring this poor run of results to an end on Wednesday when they take on Lecce away from home.
