Football Data: facts and figures on the Derby della Lanterna

Let’s take a look at some numbers from the Genoa derby with the help of Italy’s leading statistics provider Football Data.

Sampdoria have the edge in derby matches with Genoa as the nominal home team. The Blucerchiati have won 18 (most recently 3-2 in 2015/16) of their 48 meetings to the Grifone’s 12 (the last a 2-1 victory in 2010/11), with 18 ending all square (the latest a 1-1 draw in 2012/13). Samp have won their last three derbies at the Rossoblu and have scored in each of their last five games against Genoa for a total of seven goals. Doria have won six of the last 10 derbies hosted by Genoa.

The Derby della Lanterna has been held 16 times in March, with nine of those fixtures ending in draws. Sampdoria have the edge 4-3 in terms of wins but haven’t emerged victorious since a 3-2 home success in Serie B on 16 March 1980 courtesy of strikes from Sartori, Genzano and Roselli. You have to go as far back as 22 March 1964 to find the last time the Blucerchiati won a derby in March in the top flight, Barison hitting the winner in a 1-0 victory.

Marco Giampaolo has won both of his previous two meetings with Andrea Mandorlini. The current Sampdoria coach led Cagliari to victories over Siena in the Coppa Italia (2-1) and Serie A (1-0) in 2007/08.

Genoa have used more players than any other team in Serie A this season – 31, the same number as Pescara.

Sampdoria are unbeaten in six league matches, winning four and drawing two. The Blucerchiati last lost at Atalanta on 22 January. Their current run is their best sequence of the season.

The Rossoblu haven’t won at home in five league games, drawing two and losing three in that time. Genoa last won in front of their own supporters on 15 December, 1-0 over Fiorentina.

Sampdoria have the fewest different goalscorers of any side in Serie A. Edgar Barreto, Bruno Fernandes, Luis Muriel, Dennis Praet, Fabio Quagliarella and Patrik Schick are the men who have found the net.

No team have scored more goals off the bench in Serie A this season than Sampdoria. Nine of the Blucerchiati’s 34 goals (26.5%) have come from substitutes. Patrik Schick has six (a record across Europe’s five major leagues), while Bruno Fernandes has scored the other three.

Own goals are the order of the day in the derby. The Rossoblu have put through their own net more than anyone else (three), while Sampdoria have benefited from four “OGs”.

Daniele Orsato will officiate the Derby della Lanterna. Genoa have won 11, drawn 10 and lost six of their 27 competitive matches under the official from Vicenza. Samp’s record stands at five wins, six draws and four losses. This is the second Genoa derby Orsato will take charge of. He also oversaw the 1-1 draw on 14 April 2013.
